When she doubles over sounds like Hallelujah - Cold War Kids (Hair Down)

I remember the smiles
bare-teeth soothing-
I never knew I had dimples.

Your choir girl laughter
as the rain pours,
screams hallelujah.
My redemption shimmers in your hair.
As we lie I can
count the hours through
your tick-tocking heart’s clock.

Your back is a canvas.
I paint graphemes
as you reconcile
the sweet nothings I stroke
into your skin.

Your mask turns opaque;
I can see
parts of you that wouldn’t be had
we never met.
I see you.
Did you ever see me?

Matt Walker was born and raised in St. Petersburg, Florida. Most of his work involves his locale as being a mixture of North and South, something he’s come to terms with. He says this poem “compares religious enlightenment, in terms of a river baptism, to a lover’s relationship and questions the effects of this so-called “enlightenment.”
