Here in South Louisiana, we've been celebrating Mardi Gras since Friday. Now that Ash Wednesday is upon us, the revelry is over, but we wanted to share a few pics taken throughout the weekend in Lafayette and out in the country in Eunice.

Masks and Mayhem

A new exhibit in St. Landry Parish depicts the Courir de Mardi Gras.
“A day like this … you go out into the countryside, and you hear that haunting melody. And you see ‘em. And it’s an atmosphere that prevails. You can’t quite describe it. You can’t quite … It’s mystery, a little bit of fear, that old time can’t-wait-till-Christmas-morning type ...

Flannery O’Connor Recording Update

I know many of you are wondering about the status of the recording of Flannery O'Connor found at UL Lafayette in late January. Last night was my final class with Dr. Mary Ann Wilson, and she played a few minutes of the recording for us to hear.

He Brings Me Resurrection Ferns

by Laura Sobbott Ross

Not lilies for lovers, or roses
the color of blood cravings—pacts
mingling between velvet, thumb and thorn,
or all those daisies, posies, or pansies—
elfish, stained like Siamese cat faces;
he brings me resurrection ferns.

Where to Eat in the South in 2012

Southern food is fast becoming the nation's new "it" cuisine. New York restaurants are all trying their hand at fried chicken, and eateries with a Southern theme are popping up in each of the city's boroughs. Based in the Big Apple, Bon Appetit Magazine called the South "America's New Food Capital" in its February issue.

Southerners have long known we have a special cuisine and some downright good food down here, but Southern food used to be limited to home kitchens, with mothers and grandmothers serving as the keepers of family recipes. Now that the rest of America is discovering the cuisine, chefs are stepping up to the plate to show that Southern food can be modern and healthy.

Tasting the New Girl Scout Cookie

Each spring, as the camellias start to bloom and the days get a little bit longer, Girl Scouts begin setting up tables in front of local businesses. If you have a Scout for a neighbor, you might get a knock on the door, but otherwise you'll need to drive around town to get your annual cookie fix.

Introduced in honor of the Girl Scouts 100th anniversary this year, Savannah Smiles are bite-sized, lemon-flavored and dusted in powdered sugar.

In Love With Gatlinburg

Selected as one of America’s most romantic getaway destinations recently, the resort town of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, resides in the splendor of the Smoky Mountains. A gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Gatlinburg is a popular tourist spot in the summer, but this February, the city is calling all couples for a romantic retreat.

In its list of the Top 10 Romantic Getaways in the United States, Guidebook America suggests a mountain cabin for "wooded seclusion, small-town charm and breathtaking mountain views" as Valentine's Day approaches.

Mardi Gras Music

At Food Blog South in Birmingham last month, I stopped by the Zatarain's booth to say "hey" from Louisiana. I asked the girl who was manning the booth what the New Orleans food company had planned for Mardi Gras. She told me they had created a radio station on Pandora especially for Mardi Gras this year.

February Top 10 Events

Tracing the history of New York's legendary Apollo Theater from its origins as a segregated burlesque hall to its starring role at the epicenter of African American entertainment and American popular culture, Atlanta History Center's February exhibit is a great way to recognize Black History Month. One of a kind artifacts include James Brown’s cape and jumpsuit, Michael Jackson’s fedora, The Supremes’ dresses, Sammy Davis’ childhood tap shoes, Ella Fitzgerald’s dress, LL Cool J’s jacket and Ray Charles' music bag.
