'The Campaign' Opens This Weekend

Filmed in New Orleans and set in North Carolina, “The Campaign” (formerly named “Dog Fight”) starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis opens in theaters today. Ferrell plays Cam Brady, a longterm congressman competing for his seat against naieve director of the local tourism bureau Marty Huggins (Galifianakis). As election day nears, the two are locked in a dead heat and pulling out all the stops to win. If the movie’s website, complete with fictional campaign sites for both Cam and Marty and links to their personalized Facebook pages and Twitter accounts, is any indication of how detailed and hilarious this film will be, you may want to get to the theater early tonight. From the previews, we also think Ferrell and Galifianakis did a great job with their Southern accents. And supporting cast Jason Sudeikis, Dylan McDermott, Dan Aykroyd and Jon Lithgow don’t hurt either.

Updates: Editor Erin Z. Bass saw the movie last night and confirms its hilarity. The baby punching scene alone is worth it, even if you think you’ve already seen it in the previews. New Orleans is definitely transformed into a small town in North Carolina, and the movie’s political stunts ring true to any potential voter, no matter what side of the fence you’re on. The language is very crude and that’s why it’s rated R, so obviously don’t bring your children.

It’s been reported that Zach Galifianakis’s makeover scene was filmed at Kenneth’s Salon on St. Charles Ave. in New Orleans. Hairstylist Dara Hodges cuts his hair in the scene. Find out more and see an interview with the stylist at WGNO.
