Birmingham Fashion Week Preview

Alabama’s Magic City is ramping up for its most fashionable week of the year with internationally-renowned designers like Tibi and Prophetik coming to town. Birmingham Fashion Week kicks off February 23, with big runway shows being held February 28-March 2. This year’s schedule has expanded from four days to seven and promises the same high fashion found on the runways of New York. Local boutiques, makeup artists and hairstylists are also participating, and a panel of local and national celebrities will be judging competitions.

This year, the event biggest names in fashion include fashion designer and entrepreneur Amy Smilovic of Tibi, who will be headlining her iconic collection during the finale show on Saturday, March 2. Organizers say we can expect to see neutral colors and denim, paired with the occasional pop of pastel, floral and retro prints complimented with sheer panels, intricate cut-outs and leather detailing. Anthony Ryan Auld, recent “Project Runway All-Star” Season 2 winner, will showcase his forward, yet wearable, women’s line of clothing Friday, March 1. Currently, his clothing line is featured in stores throughout Baton Rouge and New Orleans and has already received amazing reviews at New York Fashion Week. His capsule collection with Nine West will also be available later this year.

Nashville-based visual artist and unconventional designer Jeff Garner, who draws his inspiration from the dressmakers of the Civil War period, will display his sustainable, organic label Prophetik on Thursday, February 28. His current collection, “The Princess Grace Tribute Collection,” was debuted in Monaco last year, and the Smithsonian named him a Top 40 Designer Under 40. Also notable is Birmingham native and “Project Runway” Season 2 alumnae and co-founder of Birmingham Fashion Week Heidi Elnora, who will light up the stage with her weddings gowns on Monday, February 25.
