The Best New Restaurants in America

Bon Appetit magazine includes four Southerners in its best new restaurants list.

When Bon Appetit tells us where to eat, we listen. Thankfully, the magazine has had lots of love for Southern cooking over the past few years, and this year’s top 10 restaurant list is no exception. Coming in at No. 3 is Rolf and Daughters in Nashville. Calling it the city’s “newest, coolest neighborhood joint,” the magazine says Chef Philip Krajeck was put on the earth to make pasta. “How do I express how good they were?” writes author Andrew Knowlton. “Let’s just say my friend had to tell me about all the Nashville music celebrities I didn’t notice the night we were there.”

The magazine highlights the restaurant’s Strozzapreti (a twisted pasta) with Spinach and Preserved Lemon and Orecchiette Carbonara with Charred Brussels Sprouts. Get the recipes here. We also have recipes for Rolf and Daughters’ Carrot Salad with Rye Crumble and Braised Turnip Greens with Ham Dashi and Polenta here.

Coming in at No. 6 is The Pass & Provisions in Houston, Texas. Essentially one building with two restaurants, The Pass offers fine dining and a “playful, wildly inventive, and satisfying” tasting menu on one side, with a more down to earth menu – meatball pizza and lobster rolls – on the other. Get their recipes for Creamy White Onion Soup and Ham O’Day With Rye Aioli (a reimagined ham sandwich) in the magazine.

Josephine HouseAnother pair of Texas restaurants to make the list are Jeffrey’s and Josephine House (pictured) in Austin. BA says it’s the little things like monogrammed cocktail napkins, warm bread and soft butter that make the difference here. Recently reopened Jeffrey’s specializes in serious steaks for dinner, while Josephine House has Southern-inspired lunch, brunch and snacks and drinks in the evening. The restaurants are No. 8 on the list.

The Optimist in Atlanta, at No. 7, rounds out the Southerners on Bon Appetit’s list. A playful seafood shack created by Chef Ford Fry, the restaurant features expertly shucked oysters, she-crab soup, shrimp toast, clam and lobster rolls and corn-milk hush puppies. Get their recipe for Shrimp with Ancho Butter Sauce and Fish and Chips with Malt Vinegar Mayonnaise.
