AHS Freak Show Described as Zodiac, But With Sherbet

Characters and season details on “American Horror Story: Freak Show” revealed at Comic-Con over the weekend.

FX’s “American Horror Story” made its debut at San Diego’s Comic-Con with a Saturday night panel on July 26. Emma Roberts, Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates, Evan Peters and Angela Bassett were in attendance, along with newbie Michael Chiklis, best known for “The Shield,” and Executive Producer Tim Minear.

While the panel focused mostly on last season’s “Coven,” there were a few big reveals for “Freak Show.” “I can tell you this, which is not much: It’s the best season so far,” said Minear. The main monster will be played by John Carroll Lynch, who portrayed possible Zodiac killer Arthur Leigh Allen in the 2007 film. Minear called his character the show’s “scariest creation so far.”

Other character names were also revealed, with Emma Roberts playing Maggie, Sarah Paulson as two-headed character Bette and Dot Tattler, Kathy Bates as Effil Darling, Chiklis as Wendell del Tolito, Angela Bassett as Desiree Dupre, Evan Peters as Jimmy Darling, and Jessica Lange, who was absent from the panel, playing German expat Elsa Mars.

The cast — some of whom have now worked together for three seasons — was said to share lots of laughs, with Bates giving the best line of the evening. “After my first scene last week — and this is a terrible confession to make — I couldn’t sleep until six in the morning, and then I slept for 30 hours,” she said. “And that was without drugs, I swear to God. I think [Ryan Murphy] scares the shit out of me.”

Minear wouldn’t reveal any more, but did say he could only compare “Freak Show” to a scene from “Zodiac,” but with sherbet.

The show is currently filming in New Orleans again, although its setting is 1950s Jupiter, Florida. “Freak Show” is set to air in October.
