Beat the Heat in New Orleans

Escape to the Big Easy in August and take advantage of hotel deals, COOLinary Restaurant Month and more ways to cool down before the end of summer.

You might not think the sweltering month of August and New Orleans go together, but if you’re willing to get creative, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the city and keep your cool. COOLinary Restaurant Month is happening now and means plenty of deals for dining out, while many of the best hotels are also offering savings through September. Choose one with a charming courtyard pool, order a craft cocktail, and let that last-minute vacation begin.

COOLinary Eats

More than 50 restaurants — from classics like Palace Cafe and Galatoire’s to newer spots like Criollo and GG’s Dine-O-Rama — are participating in this promotion and offering special prices on lunch and dinner. We love Palace Cafe’s Temperature Lunch, priced at the previous day’s high temperature and including specials like shrimp stew, cochon de lait poboys and red beans and rice. Specializing in refined comfort food, GG’s on Magazine Street (formerly Gott Gourmet Cafe) has a $22 dinner menu Tuesday through Saturday that includes a house salad, entree of Shrimp Almandine or Sous Vide Cajun Seared Pork Tenderloin, but the real deal is your choice of dessert. This is where GG’s shines, and right now the German Chocolate Ice Cream Bomb with house-made chocolate ice cream, coconut candied pecan ice cream and chocolate pound cake is calling our name.

Hidden Hotel Pools

If you’re traveling to New Orleans in the summer months, a hotel with a pool is a must. It might not be any larger than a watering hole, but you’ll appreciate that refreshing dip after a day of exploring the French Quarter. The classic Dauphine Orleans and ultramodern Hotel Le Marais (both part of New Orleans Hotel Collection) offer charming courtyard pools with adjacent bars for extra refreshment. These hotels are also running Summer in the City deals through September 14 that include valet parking, continental breakfast, a shopping savings book at the new Outlet Collection at Riverwalk, welcome beverages and complimentary wi-fi. For a pool with a view, book the newly renovated Windsor Court‘s Lap of Luxury Summer Leisure rate through September 18 and receive a suite upgrade plus a $50 credit you could put toward a beverage while swimming on the rooftop. (See all hotel deals here.)

Cool Cocktails

Queen's-CousinTales of the Cocktail might be over, but any visit to New Orleans will leave you with plenty of stories about libations imbibed. The city is a mecca for craft cocktails right now, and hotel bars are stepping up to join the trend, while hotspots like Cure, Cane and Table and SoBou have been getting lots of buzz. New mixologist at The Windsor Court Kent Westmoreland is bringing some obscure classic cocktails like The Queen’s Cousin and Corpse Reviver #2 to the hotel’s lobby Cocktail Bar, while the Swizzle Stick Bar in the Loews Hotel is a deco-inspired spot for sipping on bar favorites the Wild Magnolia with house-made Magnolia bitters and the Bitter Kitten with Cathead honeysuckle vodka.

And if you push your stay into September, you’ll want to keep an eye out for Jeff “Beachbum” Berry’s Latitude 29 tiki bar opening in the Bienville House Hotel. Nothing closes out summer better than a mai tai or zombie served with a straw in a hollowed out coconut.
