Dating back to apple harvest rituals of the Middle Ages, this splendidly fragrant drink has stood quite the test of time. The slow-cooked mulled cider brews a deep, fruity sweetness and a comforting spice that pairs perfectly with Virginia Distillery’s acclaimed Virginia Highland Malt Whisky—altogether a wonderful addition to a holiday-inspired gathering.
6 cups apple cider
1 cup orange juice
4 cinnamon sticks (plus additional for garnish)
8 whole star anise
1 Tbsp. sugar
1 Tbsp. whole allspice
Juice of 1 lemon
Virginia Highland Malt Whisky
In a large crockpot, bring all ingredients except whisky up to a low boil. Cover and reduce heat and allow mixture to simmer on low for a minimum of 3 hours. Pour one cup of the wassail into a glass mug. Stir in 1 ounce (or more!) of Virginia Highland Malt Whisky. Garnish with a whole cinnamon stick and serve. Makes 6-8 cocktails.
