Coastal Casinos Weather Another Storm

Believe it or not, the Southern states have quite a reputation for being home to some of the world’s most popular gambling meccas. Specifically, tucked into the quaint cities along the Mississippi Gulf Coast is a huge collection of luxury casinos and casino resorts.

This spread of reputable gambling establishments is a huge tourism draw for the small state of Mississippi. Although Mississippi does have sandy beaches, one of the largest tourism draws for the state is its collection of casinos that line the water of the coast with fun and entertainment.

History of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Gambling Industry

Although Mississippi is usually a fairly conservative state, it has a rich history of gambling. Even in the early settling of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, card games where money was gambled were extremely popular.

During the 1950s, the gambling industry was built up quite a bit through hotels that offered slot machines for their guests. Locals would often visit these slot machines to have their own fun, and the area also became a popular place for out of town guests to visit as well.

Around this same time, a group of opposition against the gambling industry in Mississippi, but specifically on the Gulf Coast, began a huge campaign to make gambling illegal in the state. Although there were investigations done as a result of this opposition, nothing was ever completely done to shut down gambling on the Gulf Coast.

That is until Hurricane Camille wiped most of the standing establishments from the ground. This catastrophe actually caused both the gambling industry and virtually all tourism to come to a complete halt for a full two decades on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

However, in the 1990s, new legislation allowed gambling establishments to be built along the coast and along the Mississippi River. These establishments quickly brought back the tourism and the overwhelmingly popular gambling industry.

Unfortunately, tragedy struck again in 2006 when Hurricane Katrina ripped through the coastal area. Almost all of the standing casino establishments were completely wiped out. Unlike the previous storm, however, the coast has been able to rebuild itself fairly quickly and now is one of the largest gambling attractions in the United States.

Since the 1990s, Mississippi has actually grown to allow online casinos as well. These casinos, such as the Coolcat casino, are a great way to gamble from home. Keep in mind that there are regulations for players in these online casinos and follow common-sense precautions to keep yourself from getting into trouble.

How Lockdown Affected the Casino Industry on the Coast

Unfortunately, casinos had to shut their doors to patrons for a period of time as we all face the uncertainty of COVID-19 together. In March of 2020, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves ordered a mandatory shelter in place order for the entire state. Casinos have since reopened at 50 percent capacity, with masks and screenings for guests required.

Other coastal Mississippi businesses are also starting to reopen, and the area encourages responsible visitation. Beaches are open, and beach-goers must stay at least six feet apart and avoid gathering in groups with more than 20 people.

Alternate Ways to Gamble

Things are slowly but surely beginning to open back up, however, casinos are still not ready to allow the thousands of people that usually visit on a weekly basis through their doors yet. So, if you are a fan of playing slots or of hitting the blackjack table, then you might be wondering if there are any alternatives for your favorite pastime of gambling the nights away
on the casino floor.

Online casinos are a great option to keep yourself entertained while the doors to the actual casinos remain closed and as concern over the spread of the virus continues. Establishing a relationship with an online casino can be a great way to build your online skills for gambling.

Most reputable online casinos are pretty close to operating in the same form that an in-person casino does. You must create an account in order to play with these online casinos. Usually, you will also have to go ahead and deposit some money into the account as well. Just like the in-person casinos, many of these online casinos offer welcome bonuses in the form of free
spins or money with which you can bet.

The more you play with these online casinos, the more rewards you can expect to see in your account. Again, it is pretty similar to an in-person casino. The major difference is that you can play these games from the comfort of your couch. Just be sure to check and make sure that the
casino you choose to play with has all of the games you are looking for before you sign up.

One other alternative to gambling at an in-person casino is the Mississippi Lottery. The Mississippi Lottery actually only became legal this past January, and it seems like quite a timely occurrence now that other gambling options are shut down indefinitely.

There are a lot of great things about the gaming industry on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Now that the industry has changed once again as a result of COVID-19, this phase is just something else to add to the complicated history of this popular gambling location. Hopefully, the coast can bounce back once again and weather this storm of a pandemic.
