White Clover
by Olivia McGahee
March, mourning dove purrs
I look down at her feet
there it was, it found me
plucked it from the root and
said a prayer
tender, wiry, full of life and still –
Rare.
grandma
yes, sweetheart
do you know how lucky you are
to have so many and I
only one.
Olivia McGahee’s family has lived in Canton, Georgia, for centuries. She has a photo of her great-great-
grandmother that was taken just a few miles from where she grew up, and she swears she can see her face in hers. Her inspiration comes from her family that has taken over her hometown like kudzu and
swallowed it whole. McGahee is currently an English student at the University of Georgia and missing
her family greatly.
