How To Plan the Perfect Trip to Orlando with Kids

Visiting the South is a great way to spend some time in the sun and have fun. Of course, if you are travellng with kids, it can become a bit trickier, even if you are planning to take them on a tour of the theme parks in Florida.

Young kids, in particular, can find it hard to travel and, if you pair that with traveling in the heat, it can quickly go from being a fun vacation to a very stressful one. So, if you are planning to head to Orlando, Florida, this year with your kids, or anywhere else in the Southern states, here is a guide to help you plan the perfect trip—and stay cool.

Choose a Resort

Most people, when they are traveling, want to get the cheapest option for their lodging, and while this saves money, with young kids in a hot state, it can end up being a bad idea. Your kids will want room to play, and they will also likely want their own space to cool off, which equates to booking a resort with a pool.

When choosing a resort, opt for one with a good rating, such as Westgate, as their Cocoa Beach resort is perfect for families who are traveling with younger kids and want to escape from the heat.

Pack Water and Shade

This seems obvious, but you would be amazed at how many parents traveling with young kids don’t pack the right amount of water.

Even if you are driving through the South in an air-conditioned car, you will still want to make sure that your children have enough water to keep them hydrated. Also, if you are going to be taking short hikes or waiting in lines at a theme park, it is best to pack a large sun hat. When trying to protect them from the sun, you should pack something shady (such as a wide-brimmed hat) and sunscreen.

Take Breaks

When you are driving or when you are queuing in lines at a theme park with young kids, be sure to take regular snack breaks. This will prevent your kids from becoming overly tired and will also help to keep their blood sugar up, which will prevent tantrums. Nothing spoils a trip faster than a small kid having a tantrum because they are tired. Try to take it slow and take it at their pace, rather than yours.

Explain The Trip to Them

When you are traveling with younger children, you need to explain the trip to them before it happens, as this allows them to plan for it. When traveling in the Southern states, like Florida, you should explain to them that it will be warm and that they need to tell you if they feel unwell or hot. This will give them a sense of control in the situation, as well as assure them that they can talk to you if they need help in the new climate. Again, this will (hopefully) prevent tantrums and will make the trip a pleasant one for everyone.
