The Gardener

by Julie Puckett

The early days of grieving
Are a garden,
Each hour filled
With the business of doing,
Each toiling moment, a preparation
For the moment that comes after.

Faithfully, I tend my grief
In the unfamiliar stillness,
Choosing to believe
There is something beautiful
Taking root in the darkness
That might one day come to light.
