Two Poems by Libny Polynice
A Prayer for Morning
Half the night she wakes with sighs,
Tossing till the bed lies bare.
Shadows linger on the walls,
As her mind drowses off to anything but sleep.
The wind bends the trees,
Each thump against her window,
matching the rhythmic beat of her bleeding heart.
Pieces of leaves drift off into the air,
Reminding her of her dreams fading away.
The birds in the outside night hum a familiar tune
A song of rejection and heartache.
The sinking rocks struggle to stay afloat on water,
like she drowns under its weight.
She prays for morning,
But the night smothers her still.
Abandoned Home
There was a time when you were my home,
My safe place to land on,
My shelter away from the strong winds of life,
And my peace amid my chaos.
But it seems as though you have changed roles.
Instead of comfort,
You have brought an air of malaise
You trampled on the “welcome” mat, my heart.
The remnants of my heart leave behind a trail of your footprints.
The home that was once filled with love and laughter
Is now cold and desolate,
A home that once had a strong foundation
Now is ruined, waiting for me to rebuild it.
Emptiness fills the rooms as the deafening silence bounces off the walls,
Causing a void in my heart.
The door of a home that was once opened,
Is now a house of memories that is sealed shut with no hope of being reopened.
