Deep South is an online magazine covering the literature and culture of the South. We strive to celebrate Southern literature by interviewing authors, reviewing their books, creating reading lists and visiting landmarks. We also highlight book festivals and other literary events.
Our Southern Voice section presents submitted fiction, nonfiction and poetry. We also have a searchable Archive section containing all of our content throughout the years, including recipes and travel and food stories.
About the Editor/Publisher
A resident of Lafayette, Louisiana, Erin Z. Bass has more than 20 years of writing experience and received her bachelor’s in Journalism from Louisiana State University. She has worked as a staff writer for The Times of Acadiana and Independent Weekly in Lafayette, House and Home magazine in Baton Rouge, Macy’s West communications department in San Francisco and been published in Coastal Living magazine, The Times Picayune and Southern Breeze magazine.
An avid reader and book lover, Erin fell in love with Southern literature, and especially Southern women writers, during a class on the subject at LSU. It has been a dream to interview authors like Shirley Ann Grau and Dorothy Allison—and basically read for a living.
